-This is a great little float trip if you’re looking to hit a river for a quick one. Only 4 miles in length, this section of the Conecuh is a lazy trip through some beautiful scenery, including two waterfalls and some interesting rock formations. The trip can be lengthened to make it an 8.6-mile trip. The Conecuh River is a wonderful trip from just south of Point “A” Lake (where this trip begins) all the way to the Florida panhandle (where it becomes known as the Escambia River), and then into Escambia Bay, eventually flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. Longer trips provide excellent overnight adventures for the paddler as the river heads 68 miles to Florida. The trip we describe here is a simple 4-miler, but it’s good for just grabbing your canoe and paddle at short notice. It’s especially nice if you have small children because of the easy flow, the short distance, and the sights to see.

-Montgomery became the catalyst of the 1960s civil rights movement. Rosa Parks’s refusal to give up her seat to a white man sparked a year-long, eventually victorious bus boycott. A momentous march from Selma ended on the capitol steps. A cultural giant, Montgomery has a rich musical history. Some of the city’s musical luminaries include Hank Williams Sr., Nat King Cole, Clarence Carter, Toni Tenille, Metropolitan Opera singer Nell Rankin, and blues singer Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton. On the literary/artistic front, F. Scott and Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald (who was from Montgomery) met and married here. Montgomery boasts the Wynton M. Blount Cultural Park, home to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, as well as a symphony, ballet, and dance theater. The area around Montgomery shares the capital city’s significant African-American history. Tuskegee is the site of one of the first universities established to educate Blacks. Selma was the scene of many civil rights meetings, protests, and marches before the fateful march from Selma to Montgomery. In addition, Selma was the site of one of the last battles of the Civil War and was thus spared destruction of its beautiful antebellum homes. Tallassee deserves a visit just for lunch, and Wetumpka boasts an extra-special garden and several other attractions. Highlights include: the State Capital, civil rights sites, and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. The detailed itinerary in this eTrail is a driving tour that features extensive recommendations for sightseeing attractions, recreational activities, lodging, restaurants, shopping, and more.
